Picatinny vs Weaver rails explained
Picatinny and Weaver look alike, but their recoil slots differ in both width and spacing, which is why accessories do not always cross over.
The dimensions that define each rail
Picatinny is standardised as MIL-STD-1913. Its recoil slots are 0.206 inch wide, spaced 0.394 inch (10mm) centre to centre, on a rail with a top width of 0.835 inch. Because the spacing is fixed, any Picatinny accessory has a predictable place to drop its recoil lug.
Weaver came first and is looser. Its slots are 0.180 inch wide and are not spaced to a fixed standard, so the gaps between slots vary between makers. That single fact, narrower and irregular, is the root of every compatibility question that follows.
Which way the parts cross over
A Weaver-pattern ring or mount has a recoil bar around 0.180 inch, narrow enough to often slot into a Picatinny rail's wider 0.206 inch cuts. So Weaver accessories frequently fit Picatinny rails, though the fit can be loose and the irregular clamp location is not guaranteed.
The reverse is unreliable. A Picatinny accessory with a 0.206 inch recoil lug will not enter a Weaver's narrower 0.180 inch slot, and even where it does, the fixed Picatinny spacing may not line up with Weaver's irregular slots. Treat Picatinny-on-Weaver as not compatible unless the maker states otherwise.
Why the difference matters for return to zero
A recoil lug that seats loosely or at an unintended spot can shift under vibration, which shows up as a mount that will not hold its setting. Picatinny's tight, repeatable geometry is precisely why it became the military standard: an accessory removed and refitted lands in the same place.
If you plan to swap accessories between platforms, standardising on Picatinny throughout removes the guesswork rather than mixing patterns and hoping the fit holds.
How to tell them apart
Measure the slot width with a caliper: 0.206 inch is Picatinny, roughly 0.180 inch is Weaver. Then check the spacing between several slots. Even, 0.394 inch centres confirm Picatinny; uneven gaps confirm Weaver. When a rail is unmarked, those two measurements settle it.
