How to avoid return-to-zero problems with mounts

A mount that shifts is nearly always a fit or fitting problem, and the fixes are known: correct rail match, even torque, and the right recoil stop.

Get the rail interface right

Zero wanders when a mount can move on the rail. A Weaver-pattern base sitting loosely in a Picatinny rail, or a Picatinny lug forced part way into a narrow Weaver slot, both let the mount creep under recoil. Match the base to the rail properly: Picatinny to Picatinny, and confirm any Weaver base actually clamps tight rather than rattling.

On a MIL-STD-1913 rail the recoil lug should drop cleanly into a slot and clamp against it, so the mount cannot slide forward or back.

Torque the clamps evenly

Uneven ring or clamp torque is a leading cause of a scope that drifts or gets marked. Tighten ring caps in a cross pattern in small steps so the gaps stay even on both sides, and set the base clamp to the maker's figure. A torque driver takes the guesswork out and stops the two common failures, too loose so it slips, or too tight so the tube is pinched.

Even gaps top and bottom of each ring are the visual sign you have done it right.

Use a recoil stop where needed

Hard-recoiling rifles and spring-piston air rifles can walk a mount backwards over many shots. On airguns, a dovetail mount with a recoil pin that drops into the receiver hole stops this creep; use it if your rifle has the hole. On firearms, the Picatinny lug seated in a slot performs the same anchoring job.

Skipping the arrestor on a hard-recoiling airgun is a classic reason a scope slowly loses zero even when the rings are tight.

Match tube and rings so nothing slips

A ring that is the wrong bore for the tube can never hold zero, because the tube is either loose in an oversize ring or pinched in an undersize one. Confirm the tube is 1 inch, 30mm, 34mm or 35mm and use rings cut for that size, with a proper insert if you are stepping a 30mm ring down to a 1 inch tube. Correct bore, even torque and a real recoil stop together give a mount that returns to zero every time.
