How to choose scope rings
Choosing rings comes down to three matches, tube diameter, rail type and ring height, and getting any one wrong leaves the scope loose or fouling the barrel.
Match the tube diameter first
Rings clamp one tube size only. Confirm whether your scope has a 1 inch (25.4mm), 30mm, 34mm or 35mm main tube, then buy rings cut for that diameter. A ring that is one size out either will not close or cannot grip; inserts exist for the specific 30mm-to-1-inch step but are not a general fix.
This is the match to settle before anything else, because it rules out most of the rings on the shelf straight away.
Match the rail base
Next match the ring base to your rail. Picatinny rings have a 0.206 inch recoil lug spaced for MIL-STD-1913 slots. Weaver rings have a narrower 0.180 inch bar and often fit Picatinny rails too, though not always securely, while Picatinny rings rarely seat on Weaver. Airgun dovetail rings clamp an 11mm to 13mm dovetail and are a different family again.
Buy rings whose base matches the rail you actually have, rather than assuming a mount will cross over.
Choose the height
Ring height sets how high the scope sits above the rail. The objective bell must clear the barrel or rail with a small gap; a larger objective diameter needs taller rings. Too low and the bell fouls, too high and you lose a comfortable cheek weld and a repeatable head position.
As a rule, pick the lowest rings that still let the objective bell clear the rail and any iron sights, then check for a clean cheek weld before committing.
One-piece mounts and cantilevers
On a flat-top rail where the scope needs pushing forward for correct eye relief, a one-piece cantilever mount holds both rings on a single base and extends the scope over the handguard. Two-ring sets suit rifles where eye relief works with the rings straight above the rail. Choose the style that puts the scope where your eye naturally falls.
