The 11mm airgun dovetail explained

The narrow dovetail found on many airguns is a different family to Picatinny, and its width drifts between makers, which is the source of most mounting confusion.

A different rail family entirely

The dovetail on many air rifles is a pair of angled grooves machined into the top of the receiver, not a slotted flat-top rail. It is commonly called an 11mm dovetail, but measured across the dovetail the figure ranges from roughly 11mm to 13mm depending on the maker, and some designs are 13mm or 3/8 inch.

Because it is a clamped dovetail rather than a MIL-STD-1913 flat-top, it is not Picatinny and Picatinny rings will not fit it directly. Trying to force Picatinny hardware onto a dovetail is a common mistake.

Why the width varies

There is no single tightly policed standard for airgun dovetails the way there is for Picatinny, so different manufacturers cut them slightly differently. A mount described as fitting 9 to 11mm or 11 to 13mm dovetails uses clamp jaws with enough range to cover that spread, which is why so many airgun mounts quote a range rather than a single number.

Always measure your own dovetail across its widest point before buying, because a mount sized for 11mm may not close down onto a genuine 13mm groove and vice versa.

The recoil problem on spring airguns

Spring-piston air rifles produce a sharp two-way recoil that can walk a dovetail mount backwards over time. Many dovetail mounts include a recoil pin or arrestor stop that drops into a hole in the receiver to stop this creep. If your rifle has that hole, use a mount with the matching pin.

This is a real functional reason airgun mounts differ from firearm mounts rather than a marketing distinction, and skipping the arrestor is a frequent cause of a scope that slowly loses zero.

Adapting dovetail to Picatinny

If you want to use Picatinny accessories on a dovetail receiver, an adapter rail clamps onto the dovetail and presents a Picatinny top surface. Confirm the adapter's clamp range matches your measured dovetail width, and prefer one with a recoil arrestor if the rifle recoils hard. This keeps your accessory options open without forcing an incompatible fit.
